According to the Press Trust of India, police officer Lubamudra Nayak stated that the elephant had ran over Maya and that she had been rushed to the hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries.

According to reports in India, when her family members arrived at her burial for the last rites, the elephant himself appeared, pulled Murmu's body from the cremation, ran it over again, and mourners became stunned.

The family couldn't finish the funeral procedures until the elephant had left. It's unclear whether the elephant caused any other harm.

Elephant-human conflicts are prevalent in Odisha; intensive industrial activity in the mineral-rich state has escalated human encroachment on animal habitats, escalating the scale of battles between villagers and elephants.
