Texas shooting: Fifteen killed in attack at US primary school

Fifteen people were slain in a shooting at an elementary school in Texas.

Greg Abbott is the governor of Texas.

At Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, an 18-year-old gunman killed 14 kids and one teacher.

In the attack, the governor stated the suspect was equipped with a handgun and maybe a rifle.

The guy is dead, according to Governor Abbott, and responding officers are suspected of killing him.

The public has been asked to keep away from the crime scene as police investigate.

Shootings at elementary schools, where students vary in age from five to eleven, are still uncommon.

The attack on Tuesday occurred in the midst of a nationwide increase in gun violence.

Governor Abbott named the perpetrator as a local 18-year-old who "shot and killed 14 pupils and killed a teacher, terribly, incomprehensibly."

"He is dead, and responding officers are believed to have killed him," he continued.

"Two responding officers were believed to have been hit by shots but sustained no significant injuries."

According to local US media, the gunman may have also slain his grandmother at the start of the shooting spree.

The BBC reported that kids have been evacuated from the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, which is located 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of San Antonio.

Emergency personnel were treating students from the school, according to local hospitals.

A 66-year-old lady was being treated at a San Antonio hospital and was in critical condition, according to hospital officials.

On Facebook, the Uvalde Memorial Hospital announced that 13 children had been transported to the hospital "by ambulances or buses."

According to the Facebook post, two "individuals" were dead when they arrived at the hospital.

"This is a really catastrophic scenario," Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said in a text message to ABC News.

According to CBS, the FBI is assisting in the probe.

Thursday was the last day of school for the pupils in the school district. On Friday, seniors from the local high school in Uvalde, a town of around 16,000 people, will graduate.
